Bizarre table saw accident

He can still hold a beer. But Derk Schmidt, far right, of
The Hermans, is out of commission on the drums right now.

What is it about drummers that makes them such tragedy hounds? Whether they're getting offed in fictional bizarre gardering accident's (Toto's Jeff Porcaro), or losing their arms in car accidents (Def Leppard's Rick Allen) or having all their gear stolen from the back of a 1973 rusted-out Datsun, these poor mutts are always taking one for the team. Enter Derk Schmidt of the local band The Hermans, who sliced up his hand on a table saw a few days ago, a pretty serious injury that required surgery. Derk's out of commission for a while, but meanwhile the band hobbles on. Their gig at the Old Post on Friday is still a go, though it'll obviously be a more acoustic sounding set, featauring jazz and supplemented by members of the Victory Smokes. The band is also making the evening an open-mic night. No cover charge, but the (remaining) Hermans are passing around the tip jar for Derk and his injured paw. Give a little, will ya?
